MAINTENANCE CARE

A healthy foot is quite simply defined as:

  • Providing locomotion (movement without stress)
  • Having appropriate circulation (Facilitates nutrient supply, oxygenation, waste removal, and a healthy immune system)
  • Promoting a square posture (prevents wear and tear on the body and feet over time)
  • Providing abundant proprioception (where my foot is in space without looking at it)

A maintenance trim is one that needs to be monitored over time to prevent sliding into problems. Daisy uses all of her tools and education to help horses with maintenance hoof care. Hoof mapping, recognizing external landmarks as they correlate to internal anatomy, and balancing static and dynamic considerations are critical to success over time. Daisy loves caring for horses' feet that 'simply' need diligent maintenance to thrive.

REHABILITATIVE CARE

Daisy regularly takes on horses with acute and chronic hoof pathology, especially those that need urgent intervention. Daisy excels at helping these types of horses improve their hoof health, overall comfort, and quality of life.

Daisy works as part of a dynamic team to help the horses in her care. Veterinarians, both eastern and western medicines, equine body workers, equine dentists, and others all come together to help these horses heal.

These services can be provided on-site at our rehabilitation center, or Daisy travels to other barns for those that cannot trailer in.

GERIATRIC CARE

Even our geriatric horses need the best hoof care! Daisy loves helping our older citizens live their best lives. These horses often need extra help due to difficulty holding their feet up or bending their joints. Daisy delicately balances the needs of the horse with being effective in the hoof care work. Efficient and accurate is her approach when working with an older horse with balance and comfort issues.

PERFORMANCE SHOEING

Glue-on Composite shoes have advantages for the horse in many ways. Many disciplines gravitate to composite materials based on the nature of the work the horse performs. Endurance and Competitive Trail riding, for example, Dressage, and even some race horses wear Glue-on Composite Shoes. These shoes need to be changed when the horse is due for a trim just like any shoe application. We prefer to keep our performance horses on a shorter cycle, 3-5 weeks, in order to preserve the balance they need for their athletic work.

REHABILITATIVE SHOEING

Glue-on Composite shoes have advantages for the horse in many ways, especially when it comes to hoof rehabilitation. With the glue and composite materials, the hoof care provider has infinite ability to build prosthetic hoof to help the horse while they heal. These materials have a similar durometer (tensile strength and hardness) to the hoof material as well.

These shoes need to be changed when the horse is due for a trim and, depending on the type of rehabilitation that needs to be accomplished, these shoes might be changed as early as 3 weeks or as long as 8–12 weeks, depending on the situation and how much hoof the horse needs to grow!

Glue-on composite shoes help us build prosthetic for horses that need it.

1/5

Managing a club foot is very challenging, especially over time.

2/5

Reducing leverage on the toe is critical to keeping the club foot sound over time.

3/5

This club foot also has a significant rotational deformity which is exacerbated by the length.

4/5

Trimming and shoeing closer to the internal anatomy helps us minimize the rotational deformity in this club foot.
